Mercury Facts for Kids: The Fastest Planet That Shrinks!

Mercury Facts for Kids: The Fastest Planet That Shrinks!

Did you know our solar system has a racecar planet? That's right! The tiny planet Mercury, the one closest to the Sun, zips around at top speed. It’s so fast, we call it the "Fastest Planet!" But while it's racing, something funny is happening to it...

It's actually getting smaller! If you love learning about our solar system, check out Discover more amazing facts in my latest space book!

Zoom! Mercury is the speediest planet, but why does it look so worried? Click to find out the amazing fact that makes it shrink!

  • Why is Mercury so fast?

Mercury is the closest planet to the massive Sun. The Sun’s gravity pulls it incredibly hard, forcing it to move faster and faster so it doesn't crash in! It completes one full trip around the Sun (a "year") in just 88 Earth days. That’s why it’s the speed champion!

  • Why is Mercury shrinking?

Unlike Earth, which has a slowly moving outer crust, Mercury's center has cooled down and is shrinking. As the center gets smaller, the outer crust of rock and metal wrinkles up, like a raisin. Scientists estimate it has shrunk by about 7 kilometers in diameter over billions of years!
